Dear colleague,
David Barter (Head of Commissioning Clinical and Professional Leadership Directorate, MSE ICS) has asked me to issue the following invitation:
The Clinical and Professional Leadership directorate at Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System would like to invite you to their next Big Room event which will focus on dentistry and what the opportunities this might bring to an ICS. This Big Room will be taking place in person at Ye Olde Plough House, Brentwood Road, Bulphan, Essex, RM14 3SR.
The Big Room events are an opportunity to forge new relationships across old boundaries, so that as we all increasingly work across teams, professions and sectors, you can simply reach out to a familiar face to work together. Please join us at May’s Big Room event on Tuesday 23 May at 6.30pm by clicking on this link to book your ticket using the password Bigroom6. The event invite will be sent prior to the event to those who have registered.
Key note speaker: Jonathan Bouwer-Davies (Dental Director, interim Managing Director & SIB Standing Member at Smile Together, based in Cornwall).
He says: “As Dental Director I have ultimate responsibility for clinical team leadership across all aspects of our business, from our most complex special care community provision to private dentistry.
At a strategic clinical level, I lead the development of our dental services across the whole care pathway to ensure we continue to deliver the highest standards of clinical care and an excellent patient experience whilst meeting contractual and quality targets. I lead the Quality Committee and am responsible for ensuring compliance with national regulations and keeping us at the forefront of changes within the national dental landscape. I am deeply involved in clinical service improvement across our employee-owned social enterprise including developing systems of clinical governance and supervision, clinical audit, recruitment and continuing professional development with a close eye on succession planning. I have an active ambassadorial role in promoting Smile Together and frequently work in partnership with patients, clinicians, commissioners and other key stakeholders, representing us on key external committees.
I was appointed Chair of the first Urgent Care Managed Clinical Network (MCN) in the South West in June 2022. I completed post-graduate clinical training at the University of Bristol, the Eastman Dental Institute and King’s College London.
I am currently Interim Managing Director at Smile Together Dental CIC who run several services in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. I have experience in service redesign and culture change and will play a vital part in the region’s Dental Reform Programme, particularly through chairing the Southwest Access Working Group. I am also currently undertaking an MBA at the University of Oxford.
The most fun and inspiring aspect of my role is the time I get to spend with our extraordinarily dedicated and experienced team of clinicians and professional support colleagues working so hard on behalf of our patients.”
Agenda for the Big Room:
From 18:30, join colleagues for informal networking, food and to share news from your part of the system.
From 19:00, Dr Ronan Fenton will introduce Jonathan Bouwer-Davies, for an interactive session to reflect on dentistry in an ICS.
Following Jonathan’s session, there will then be an opportunity to explore these concepts and what they mean in practice.
If you’d like to join discussions and share your views, please register here with the password: Bigroom6 to secure you place in The Big Room. The event invite will be sent prior to the 23 May to those who have registered.
We look forward to seeing you there.

And finally, an invitation to the NHS 75th birthday – Westminster Abbey service:
The ICB has the opportunity to invite a limited number of representatives to Westminster Abbey service to mark the 75th Anniversary of the NHS. We are keen to offer an opportunity to a dental representative. We cannot guarantee a place but the quicker we get confirmation of a representative, the more likely it is for them to be able to attend.
As I am sure you will know, the NHS marks its 75th birthday this year. The past few years have been the toughest yet for the NHS however, but thanks to incredible people like you, it is a time to celebrate the amazing achievements, skills and dedication of local staff and our partners.
We have been asked to identify people that represent the incredible work happening every day in mid and south Essex at Westminster Abbey, London on Wednesday 5 July from 11am to 12.30pm.
We cannot sadly guarantee a place but all nominations need to be sent by 2pm on Friday 12 May.
I have pasted some FAQs below which answers questions you may have about the event and process for receiving invitations.
For more information about the birthday, please visit: www.england.nhs.uk/NHSbirthday.
Best wishes,
Claire Routh (Senior Head of Communications)
