I have received the following request from the BDA:

NHS GDPs in England - Share your experiences

Dear colleague,The NHS general dental service faces a significant crisis. There is widespread and deep frustration with the NHS GDS contract and NHS pay has fallen substantially in real terms. General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) are increasingly reported to have reduced their NHS commitment, and the headcount number of NHS GDPs in England has fallen to levels not seen since 2017. Yet, despite this, tens of thousands of GDPs continue to work for the NHS.

The BDA has therefore recently launched a research project which intends to establish why many dentists continue to work for the NHS general dental service. It will seek to identify the motivations that led them to work for the NHS and the motivating factors that lead them to continue to work on the NHS. This will help to inform how the BDA approaches the development of policy on NHS contracts, recruitment, retention, workforce and pay.

In order to do this, we need your help! Could you spare approximately 1 hour in September to tell us about your experiences working for the NHS general dental service? In order to aid our policy activity, we need to understand your experiences.

If you are an NHS GDP in England and interested in finding out more about this project and taking part, please register your interest below by completing our short survey. If you have any questions, please email:

Ella Buckland (Research Analyst, BDA       020 7563 4157)
