Important: Message from NHS England Regarding Tier 2 Restorative Referrals

Here follows a message from Primary Care Support (Dental), NHSE / NHSI EoE:

Dear Colleagues

Further to the email below sent 14 April 2021 advising of the new Pilot Endodontic and Periodontic Tier 2 Service, we regret to advise that inappropriate referrals have been received, resulting in a high number of rejections.

Please find attached a reminder of the criteria for each service. Kindly ensure that your patient fits the criteria before referral. The referral criteria information is also conveyed within the referral management services website. (FDS website). For your ease please find herewith a direct link to the referral criteria (in addition to the attached)

The referral form can be found by accessing the dental area within the referral management site at:

All inappropriate referrals will be signposted back to the referring dentist

It will be the duty of the referring dentist to communicate to their patient the reason for the referral rejection, and any ongoing clinical needs/alternative treatment options.

To further support clinicians with this referral pathway, the Restorative MCN chairs will be organising a webinar, details of which will be circulated shortly.

Thank you for working with us to support this valuable service.

Kind regards
